FAQ
Therapy has been shown to be helpful in improving one’s ability to cope with the challenges of life, build resiliency, increase self-esteem, deepen insight and self-awareness, and improve relationships. Many people find that therapy empowers them to make meaningful changes in their lives and be more hopeful about the future. Therapy is most helpful when one is actively engaged in the therapeutic process and uses the skills and insights gained in therapy in their everyday lives.
While there is no way to predict how many sessions will be needed to help you meet your goals, many people find that they begin experiencing some amount of symptom relief within the first handful of sessions. Keeping open lines of communication with your therapist to continue assessing progress, needs, and recommendations is important. While therapy is a great resource, it is not meant to last a lifetime. Ultimately, you decide when you are ready to decrease frequency between sessions or discontinue therapy altogether.
Most appointments begin with a check-in about how you have been doing between sessions and any concerns that have come up in the meantime. This includes what you have noticed about your mood, functioning, and how any homework assignments from the previous session went. After a check-in, you can expect for something specific to be explored in depth which relates to your overall therapy goals, and this may include being introduced to new, helpful information and/or skills. To end the session, you may be asked what you intend to work on in the week to come or be provided with a specific homework assignment. I like to end my sessions with words of encouragement and strengths-based feedback.
